The GUI of A+ is based on the X Window System, which is
a (the original?) cross-platform GUI.

Perhaps your definition of cross-platform requires the use
of the native GUI on each platform?  I think that would be
quite an unusual usage of the term.

By the way (please be gentle with me, as I'm not a MS person),
aren't there implementations of X available for MS Windows (tm)?
Is the problem that there are none that are both good and free?
