Re-reading your email, it seems as though you may want back the meta
key in XEmacs that a-mode has stolen from you.  This way, you could
say M-b and go back a word.

In this case, you can use the ESC key instead of C-[.  I don't know
how a-mode broken C-[, but ESC can't be broken (I hope).

Or wait for me to release my version of a-mode that allows you to use
M-b for backwards-char and A-b to insert the A+ code.
