Having seen that you are using OS X, there are two possible places for
the Meta key.  If you are running xemacs in a terminal, it is the
Option key.  If you are running xemacs within XDarwin, it is the Apple
key.

Note that this is a modifier key, just like Shift or Control.
Therefore, you must hold it down while you type the letter, and then
release it.
