and if you look at the java code in the document steve
sent, you might conclude that i still don't know java.

please don't judge the fragements contained in the
doc too harshly.  the idea was to convey a feeling for
the methodology, without revealing too much code, since
we have yet to decide if/when/how we should make this
stuff available.
