That is more or less the approach that K will reportedly take with its 
next version (dubbed K4; they are skipping 3 for some reason). The new 
Java front-end was presented at the last APL conference. Mike Rosenberg
was supposed to post a write-up on the K mailing list but so far he hasn't,
so there is not much information available on the design yet.

That seems to me to be the way to go if it works well. It's just so much
more flexible than linking the engine and the GUI at the source level.
